Cubify is a new 3D printer from 3D Systems that debuted at the Consumer Electronics Show. First spotted at a Treehugger post, Cubify Brings 3D Printing To Your Livingroom, by Jaymi Heimbuch. You can’t help but love the elegance and playfulness of this machine.
I heard through more than one source that it drew loads of crowds at CES. More than the crowds, more than the fun look of it, I’m most impressed with their effort to create a platform for designers and makers — the program is called, “Be a Cubify Artist.”
The site reads:
Reasons to become an Artist:• It is free to join, free to share/sell, and you will be paid an excellent royalty rate monthly. There are no contracts to sign, no fees to list products, and no monthly fees or hosting fees of any kind.
• You get to set the price for your creations and get a 60% royalty on sales – one of the best in the industry.
• We have a very robust and advanced security and anti-fraud system that protects your creations at all times.
• After reaching certain uploading and sale milestones, you will earn Cubify™ badges that will elevate your presence within the Cubify™ community.
• If you load a STL 3D model format, our staff reviews your model and works with you to get to a “3D Printable” state. Once that certification is achieved, your model can be submitted by buyers to be 3D Printed. You then benefit from an additional 10% royalty stream every time the model is submitted to our 3D Printing Service.
So, as a revenue-sharing model, it is pretty impressive. If you are a young, up and coming maker, thinking of starting your own business selling kits or designs or project files, Cubify might be worth a look.
Who knows, the Adafruit Skill Badges program may have to add a Cube shaped Cubify skills badge soon.
